Question-
Would the "scanning back sharpen" setting be appropriate when using a flatbed (Epson 1680) to scan 3d objects?
Thanks.

The "scanning back sharpen" is for 3 pass scan backs like the Betterlight models. As they scan in separate passes for R,G and B there is no color interpolation involved and images have extremely well resolved detail. So this setting would provide the least amount of sharpening. The Epson flatbed is a single pass scanner whether scanning film or 3 dimensional objects and will require much more aggressive sharpening.

Greg,
I honestly have no idea. It's not something we ever tested (and it's something I've only done a handful of times). Try it and let us know. If you want to send me a file, you can do so at

Thanks Bruce, I have tried it and it seems to work quite well. Just was wondering if you guys had played with it in that way. Amadou's point about the mutlipe passes makes sense but the image quality even from a single pass scanner like the 1680 seems to exceed the other high res digitial camera sharpener settings.
I can show you some files at Great Lakes Digital, they are on the large size!... My partner does a lot of "scan-o-gram" work and we've been tweaking the workflow quite a bit of late.
