The iPhoto book option (Mac only) has proved to be a useful tool when I want to give potential clients a sample from my portfolio of images.
The iPhoto book order upload appears to compress the files (must be RGB jpegs to use the service) quite heavily and it has not been possible for me to get a useful handle on the output resolution issues. Apple have no public database describing the process and their technical support department were unable to find any relevant information about the output resolution of the machine used to output the iPhoto books. Web searching has not revealed anything useful; although my lack of knowledge may have contributed to an ineffective web search.
Looking at the images on the book pages suggests to me that a CMYK process printing process has been used in conjunction with a line screen of possibly 120 lines. I wonder if any of the pixel geniuses, or the forum membership, can advise me as to how best to proceed with the currently unknown output resolution and image compression ratios, so as to help me work towards the best output that can be achieved.
I am assuming that I should output sharpen using halftone output sharpeners. I need help with the most effective method for determining lpi screen size from the images I have received in an iPhoto book and how to find out if the images are printed onto coated or uncoated paper.
Does anyone have any information or guidance for me concerning the machine that is used to produce the output? I am guessing that not many manufacturers (if any) produce machines that can impose, print and bind an entire book and wonder if anyone has any ideas on the machinery that is being used to carry out this task. I can see that CTP in conjunction with a separate finishing and binding service is a probability. I wondered if the speed of the service and the output quality imply that a different process is being used. I cannot find mention of an all-in-one machine anywhere.
