View Full Version : Inkjet Output Sharpening higher than resolution - big deal?

I work at 360ppi as a default when converting RAW files. I then have a series of PSCS Actions that prepare files for print e.g. for 7x5 I use Creative Luminance2/Output Glossy360 & for 10x8 Creative Luminance3/Output Glossy360. The camera is the 1DII the printer Epson2100 & the paper Ilford Smooth Gloss or Smooth Pearl. I should add that these images are not fine art requiring lots of editing; rather volumes of prints from weddings, corporate events etc and the above defaults work fine.

I now want to print a portfolio at 14inches x 10 inches (fits in flush mount wedding albums just great!)

All my actions are set up for Output Sharpening at Glossy360ppi. I actually want to RAW convert at 240ppi so as to need virtually no interpolation.

My question is: Is there a significant difference between 360ppi Inkjet Glossy output sharpening and 240ppi Inkjet Glossy output sharpening when run on an image that has a resolution of 240ppi and is sized at 14ins x 10ins? If so is it image content dependent? Clearly I could spend a day doing test prints but if someone already has the answer 1) carry on with your existing actions, or 2) rewrite your Actions, that would be very helpful.

Pete,

if I understand Bruce correctly, then it's really important to choose the Output sharpener nearest to your image resolution. I've done some tests with using glossy settings for matte paper and vice versa, but only with the same ppi setting. Sometimes it works fine and sometimes it doesn't. For me it often depends on the image content.

Rewrite your actions to apply the Inkjet Glossy 240 output sharpener to the 240-ppi files.

We're aiming for a sharpening halo between 1/50th and 1/100th of an inch, because at that size you can't see the halo as a separate feature at normal viewing distance?it's just too small.

So the inkjet 360 sharpeners try to create a halo approximately 3.6 pixels wide. At 240ppi, the haloes will be too big.
