Sharpener stopped working

For no apparent reason, Sharpener seems to have lost its ability to sharpen. It goes through all the steps, but there is no change to the image. Also, the sharpening brushes in Creative Sharpening have no effect. The appropriate layers appear, but even at levels 3 and 100% opacity, there is no effect on the image. The diffusion and softening brushes are also DNF.

I am on a Mac, system 10.3.5, PS CS.
Any assistance would be appreciated - I LOVE this application.

Check to see if you've flipped your Channel Options from "Color Indicates" = Masked Areas to Selected Areas. (To do so, add a channel to any open doc, then double-click its tile in the Channels palette.)

If that isn't it, email a small snippet of a file that includes the nonfunctioning layers to

I have checked the Channels and all is well. I was mistaken originally - Capture and Output layers are fine - it is the Creative brushes (layers) that don't work. The requested snippet has been sent.
