I'm curious - sometimes when I merge down, I notice a shift in density - what should my workflo be?

here's what i do:

1- scan B/W neg on my imacon 646 - 62-3 megs -RGB
2- open in PS - make dupe layer for spotting
3- correct any levels or curves in an adj layer
4- photoKit burns - ei: 4 corners, bottom 1/3 etc
5- photokit or channel mix convert to monotone
6- save tiff for archive
7-resize for print
8- view at 100%
9- Photokit output sharpen

As you know, this is now a big file. I want to combine some of the layers

thoughts??

There's really no way to answer this question. There's simply not enough info. In general, merging layers may or may not produce the exact same results as flattening an image because of the way in which layer blending produces an accumulative effect. Incremental merging of layers may not produce the same result due to varying blend modes and opacities.

Sometimes putting various layers within a set and placing a solid pixel layer at the bottom of the set stack will help with merging the layer set. But the exact method depends largely on the number of layers, their blend mode and their opacities. Hard to give a hard answer without knowing the exact layers and types involved.

thanks Jeff

I will use flatting rather than merge
