View Full Version : Photokit color 2.01 - A couple of strange things

Just going through a few images and I have noticed some peculiar effects with Photokit Color 2.01. First of all, when I apply some of the chrome effects on images with strong red tones like tomatoes those areas are taking on an almost posterised effect with my 1Ds II files. This is most apparent on the vivid chrome effect and basically causes all of the tonal transitions in those regions to disappear. No other colours seem to be adversely effected, so I am running the action, but then painting the red areas from history to get a usable file. Any suggestions of a better way to get around this?

Secondly, I've just noticed when running the blue sky effect on images with an average blue sky that the effect works well if the image is in Adobe RGB or SRGB but if the file is in ProPhoto then it leads to some pretty whacky results on a test file I just tried with some daffodils and the yellow parts began to look very unnatural as well. Perhaps this is just a strange blip with one image but I thought it was worth mentioning. The ProPhoto image can be corrected with the opacity slider but its strange that the result from the default setting is so extreme compared to the other RGB colour spaces.

Probably the best thing to do is to email me directly at martin@pixelgenius.com with any image examples that you have. We did test all the effects on many diffferent files and with different RGB spaces. There were some images where the effects would not always produce optimum results, but to tone down the effect to suit one type of image would have meant compromising where it worked better on most other pictures.

We only optimised the effects for different RGB spaces where the colour matching would be critical, such as the colour corrections and the Chrome efffects. We did not go down that route for the more extreme creative effects, but it may be a consideration if you are seeing bad results for Pro Photo RGB only.

Send me the files so I can take a look.

I wouldn't say that the colours I saw from the ProPhoto space were bad as such when I applied the blue sky effect. Its just that they were notably different at default settings from the SRGB and Adobe RGB. In ProPhoto they took on an exaggerated saturation that was reminiscent of 1950's Kodachrome whereas the same file in SRGB or Adobe RGB looked more natural and perhaps more importantly consistent. I am thinking here more about a scenario where you might need to prepare files in different colour spaces but maintain similar looking results.

Would it help you if I send you a download link to get the Raw files themselves or do you just want a jpeg or tiff?

A direct email would be best. JPEG will be fine, in the correct colour spaces of course.
