View Full Version : Photokit tells me my images are 141.73 ppi!

I'm using Photokit Sharpener version 1.2.4 with Photoshop CS2 on a Power Mac G5 Dual processor 2.0 GHz with 3 MB of RAM. I convert my Canon CRW raw files to tiff using ACR and Capture 1 LE version 3.7.3. I use a resolution of 360 ppi.

Photokit Sharpener seems to be confused about the resolution of my files!

In the dialogue box which pops up when selecting: File -> automate -> Photokit Output Sharpener, there is the following text:

"NOTE: The image must be at final output size!
Current size: 30.82 cm X 20.55 cm @ 141.73"

To my understanding, 141.73 is the ppi of the image. In this case, the image is actually 360 ppi, not 141.73 ppi.
Photokit seems to be telling me that the current resolution is 141.73, when in fact it is 360.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there a fix? Does it matter?

EDIT: I've just answered my own question: the 141.73 is pixels per centimetre!! When I use inches as units, the correct 360 ppi is given by Photokit. Oops... must concentrate better....

PK is telling you that the resolution is 141.73 pixels per centimeter!

It uses whatever units you've set in Preferences>Units and Rulers. Set them to inches and PK Sharpener will tell you that the file is 360 pixels per inch.

Thanks Bruce! I edited my post as you were posting your reply.
I feel rather dumb, I must say!

Thanks to all at PixelGenius for a great product, btw, which even knows when it's being metric!

You shouldn't feel dumb. I have never heard anyone use pixels per centimeter other than the Pixel Genius guys creating PK sharpener. Even if the print size is expressed in cm (as we usually do in Europe), resolution is expressed in PPI. It should be easy for PG to change this in the next software update (or let us choose, IF someone really use PPC...)

No, actually-we get the image data from Photoshop so whatever settings Photoshop is currently set to in terms of units is what we're reporting. We have no way of knoweing that the user wants a different unit report nor is there anything we can do to change it.

Thanks Lars! I feel less dumb now :-)
I always use cm for sizes (I'm in Europe too), but have no "feel" for pixels per cm. I guess even us Europeans haven't become entirely metricated!

Jeff: that's odd, because Photoshop gives me my image size in cm, but resolution in ppi.
